New Skills for a New Millenium

The world of work has and will continue to change rapidly. Globalisation, pressure on costs, changing social attitudes and probably most of all information and communications technology will continue to change all aspects of work for instance:

  • Who does work
  • How long work is done
  • Where work is done
  • How work is done
  • What we mean by work

A new report prepared for RSA (Royal Society of the encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce) considers these issues and how businesses, individuals, governments and institutions must prepare and plan for change if they are to survive and prosper.

New competencies believed to be needed to survive in the next millennium include:

  • Literacy, Numeracy, and IT capability to high levels
  • An understanding of ethics, values and how society, business and government work
  • How to learn new skills and knowledge
  • How to evaluate and appreciate information
  • How to take charge of your own learning
  • How to deal with other people, and how to value them
  • How to communicate effectively with others
  • How to work in teams
  • How to cope with change
  • How to make things change
  • How to manage risk & uncertainty
  • How to be assertive
  • How to manage your time to get results
  • How to manage your life, including your financial affairs
  • How to manage personal and emotional relationships
  • How to make the best of your creative talents
