Environmental Update
As of the last quarter of 1996 25 companies had registered to EMAS, the Environmental
Management and Audit Scheme, demonstrating that environmental management and corporate success
can work effectively together. The Chemical industry had led the way with four registrations,
closely followed by three printing companies and two from the automotive sector.
In terms of company size it not all down to the big guys either, although two ICL sites have
registered five of the 20 companies were small companies.
In celebration of these early successes a new batch of promotional material has been developed.
A number of case studies may be particularly useful:
- an introductory composite case study: this outlines the 7 EMAS steps
- developing an environmental policy
- environmental review
- environmental programmes
- environmental management systems
- environmental audit cycles
- environmental statements
- validation
It also shows how seven different companies are taking forward work under each of the steps.
Three other case studies include:
- a Hertford based printer with 45 employees has registered and in doing so made savings of
over £20,000
- another small company involved in forging, pressing and stamping metals. Woodcote have seen
benefits in the more efficient use of energy, recycling and reduced emissions.
- the parent of one Kidderminster based electronic company is so taken with the results of
the registration and its benefits, it has decided to introduce the scheme to all other
companies in the group.
